What’s Happening at DCS 2016/2017

SEPTEMBER 2016

  • August 29-September 1 – Senior Girls Volleyball team tryouts/practices started early as they had a tournament right away! Five volleyball teams were formed this year…3 Junior Girls teams, 1 Junior Boys team and 1 Senior Girls team.
  • September – High School students sold 150 of the very popular Student Union Coupon Books this month.
  • September 1 – First day of school for students!
  • September 2 – Welcome Back Pancake Breakfast, Senior Girls Volleyball tournament at Red Deer College.
  • September 12 – Cigar Box Guitar music program started today in the grade 4 class.
  • September 13 – WE Club held their first meeting of the year.
  • September 14 – Leadership Club held their first meeting of the year.
  • September 15 – Parent Orientation Night for grades K-8. Parents were introduced to what the school year would look like and chat with the teachers.
  • September 18 – Adopt-a-School Program with Coles Book store in Parkland Mall, Red Deer.
  • September 20 – Cross country runners participated in the Dawe Run, Red Deer. The club ran every Monday/Wednesday/Friday at lunch, throughout the season.
  • September 21 – Cross Country grade 7-9 team participated in CENAA Run in Sundre.
  • September 22 – Author Sigmund Brouwer visited our school for a presentation to grade 3-9 students.
  • September 27 – Mr. Hope’s Boomerang Club started up.
  • September 28 – Grades 9-12 went to Citadel theatre in Edmonton.
  • September 28 – Ghost Riders Club went on a Field Trip to Stettler.
  • September 29 – DCS Awards at 9:00am, sponsor: Delburne & District Ag Society. First PAC meeting of the year.
  • September 30 – Terry Fox Run, High School Awards Night.
  • Milk Program started in September with the grade 3’s delivering milk orders to the classrooms. We also continued our Paper Recycling Program and Bottle Recycling Program within the school.

OCTOBER 2016

  • October 5 – A few of our students participated in the Indigenous Student Conference in Olds, Alberta. We also came away with a beautiful painting from the conference, which is hung in the office.
  • October 6 – K-6 CENAA cross country run in Innisfail. Mary Lambert presented a performance about Fire Safety.
  • October 11 – Grade 1/2 P went on a Field Trip to Coles Book Store , Parkland Mall, Red Deer.
  • October 13 – Grade 9-12 Parent/Teacher Conferences were held. CWAJHAA cross country run for grades7-9 students in Lacombe.
  • October 15 – Our volleyball athletes took in a Queens & Kings volleyball game at RDC. They got to watch a DCS alumnus play for SAIT!
  • October 18 – Bus Evacuation drills were held in the school parking lot for all bus students.
  • October 20 - DCS HAS (Healthy Active Student Leadership Team) attended a Healthy Active School Symposium.
  • October 25 – Dental presentation for students in grades K-3. PAC held their Annual General Meeting.
  • October 26 – WE Club students took part in WE Day at the Saddledome, Calgary. During October the club held a Food Bank Drive (WE Scare Hunger), collecting nearly 300 items from the community!
  • October 27 – DCS Awards were held at 11:00am, sponsor: Servus Credit Union.
  • October 31 – Halloween activities were held in the afternoon including grade 1-3 Costume Parade, Nickel Carnival hosted by grades 4/5 and a movie (Ghostbusters) hosted by our High School Leadership Group!. Many classes held pot luck lunches.
  • During October Mr. Marfleet and Mrs. Simpson spearheaded the Junior Trojans Volleyball program during Monday/Wednesday lunches. The small gym was full of eager grade 5/6 students!

NOVEMBER 2016

  • November – PAC held a fall fundraiser selling garden fresh potatoes, carrots and onions. DCS also ran a Poinsettia fundraiser to offset the cost of our yearbooks. We also held some great gift idea fundraisers for Christmas…Fundscrip (online gift cards) and Dielman catalogue shopping (Regal replacement).
  • November 8 – Remembrance Day Assembly at the school in the Large Gym. Many Legion members, RCMP , politicians and community members attended along with DCS staff and students. DCS students also took part in the Legion Poster, Poem and Essay contest this month. 14 students from WE Club volunteered at Potter’s Hands in Red Deer, serving 198 meals to the less fortunate.
  • November 9 – Grade 11/12’s went on a Field Trip to Agri-Trade at the Westerner, Red Deer. The students attend as part of the Red Deer County’s Agri-Trade Reporter contest and must write an essay after the event. Over the past three years, DCS students have won almost $3000 in scholarships through this program.
  • November 10-14 – Fall Break.
  • November 22 – Mr. Unterschultz’s grade 8 Career & Technology Foundation group started a healthy eating initiative called Snack Shack. Every Tuesday/Thursday students sold veggies & dip and fruit bowls until the end of Semester 1.
  • November 22-Dec 1 – Scholastic Book Fair was held in the Learning Commons.
  • November 23 – Parent/Teacher Conferences were held from 3:30-8:00pm. The revised drop-in format for grades 4-12 appeared to go over well with both staff and parents! We also had a Mini Trade Fair including delicious Elephant Ears. Profits from Elephant Ears went to STARS Air Ambulance!
  • November 24 – DCS Awards at 1:00pm sponsored by Surge Energy Inc. Grades 7/8 attended a play in Red Deer called Under My Skin. This was an awesome learning opportunity, focused on healthy choices and positive body image. Our monthly PAC Meeting was held at 6:30pm.
  • November 28 – Don’t Walk in the Hallways/Active Brains programs began in our hallways.
  • November 29 – Digital Safety Presentations with Joe Whitbread & Jo Phillips (grades 9 & 10).
  • Congratulations to three volleyball teams that made it to playoffs. Junior Boys won bronze at CENNA and Junior Girls White team won silver at CENAA. They both worked hard enough to be selected to make the CWAJAHAA playoff tournament. Senior Girls ended up 5th at Zones, just missing semi-finals. They had a very successful year, winning Caroline Tournament and ending up League Champions!

DECEMBER 2016

  • Basketball season started this month with 4 teams at DCS (JH Girls, JH Boys, SH Girls , SH Boys)
  • December 2 – Leadership/Healthy Active School Team Field Trip to Heritage Lanes, Red Deer.
  • December 16 – Wear a Hat for Red Deer SPCA. Staff and students were allowed to wear a hat in school for a $1.00 donation. All proceeds went to the SPCA.
  • December 17 – WE Club had a full day of activities in Red Deer. In the morning they did some Christmas shopping at Ten Thousand Villages, ate lunch at Tandoor Flame and Grill and then spent the afternoon wrapping gifts at Bower Mall, collecting donations for CAWES (Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter).
  • December 20 – MADD Assembly for grades 6-10. Grades 4-6 went swimming in the afternoon at the Three Hills Aquatic Centre.
  • December 21 – Christmas Door Decorating contest was judged. Also, Christmas Spirit Day was held… staff and students were encouraged to wear their best Christmas clothing - Santa hats, reindeer antlers, ugly sweaters etc. We had some very creative homemade ugly sweaters! At lunch we had Photos with Santa in the Learning Commons.
  • December 22 – Elementary Christmas Concert (K-3) was held in the Small Gym. Dress rehearsal at 1:30pm, evening performance at 7:00pm. Admission was a donation to the Delburne Food Bank!
  • December 23 – PJ Day…staff and students wore pyjamas to school! Many classrooms had Christmas potluck parties. Grades 1-5 went to the arena for some fun times on the ice. We had a special guest skater, WHL player Dallas Valentine, joining the students on the ice!
  • Leadership students delivered hot beverages to staff the last week before Christmas, to add to the Christmas spirit of giving!

JANUARY 2017

  • January was exam month! Our first week back was full of practice exams getting prepared for grade 9 PAT’s, 10/11 finals and grade 12 diplomas.
  • Delicious Diploma Breakfasts were served on diploma days, before students wrote their exams. Staff and students could order…pancakes, bacon and beverage/ ham & egger, beverage/ breakfast casserole, beverage/ fruit, muffin, croissant, beverage/ eggs benedict, beverage.
  • Roots of Empathy Program started up again for the grade 1 students.
  • January 26 – monthly PAC Meeting.
  • January 27 – Grades 6-8 went on a Field Trip to the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer, to finish off Semester 1 with a variety of activities.
  • January 30 – Grade 4’s & 5’s started their Swimming Program in Three Hills, until February 17.
  • January 31, February 1 – Our school was able to works its first casinos! We had many volunteers from the community sign up to work the 2 nights.

 

February 2017

  • Semester 2 began with an assembly for the High School students, discussing the new semester.
  • Grad fundraising has begun. Tickets for Beef Supper went on sale for $25.00.
  • February 2 – DCS Awards at 9:00am sponsored by the Carratt Family.
  • February 9, 13 – High School Leadership took orders at lunch for Valentine Roses.
  • February 14 – Students/staff were asked to wear white, red or pink to support Kindness Day!
  • February 14-16 – DCS Curling Bonspiel was held this week with a different theme each day.
  • February 15 – PAC Meeting at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons.

March 2017

  • Mr. Hope’s Cigar Box Guitar Club started up again after school!
  • Badminton season started up, with a Junior High Team and Senior High Team.
  • Lunch time intramurals were organized this month by, and for, Middle School students. (4 corner dodge ball, last man standing). Elementary students played intramural floor hockey.
  • DCS partnered with the Delburne Curling Club to provide a curling program for grades K-3 and 4-6 students after school.
  • March 1, 2 – Grad Photos on stage.
  • March 2 – DCS Awards sponsored by Village of Delburne.
  • March 6 – Middle School ski/snowboard trip to Nakiska, Kananaskis.
  • March 15 – World of Choices field trip to Red Deer for grades 10 & 11. WE Club sold St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes to raise money for the Clean Water Project in Tanzania. WE raised over $300.00!
  • March 16 – DCS has guest speakers in to talk about LGBTQ to grades 9-12.
  • March 17 – Wear Green Day to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Inspirational guest speaker Jesse Ward (former DCS student) spoke to the entire school. He competed in the 2015 Toronto Parapan Ams Sitting Volleyball Team and won a Bronze medal!
  • March 20 – Grade 6 Field Trip to the Legislature in Edmonton.
  • March 21 – 3 DCS basketball students, Austin McLeod, Ben Scott and Darby Duda represented our school at this year’s RDC Senior Bowl. Scholastic Book Fair begins until March 30th.
  • March 22 – Grade 7/8 Field Trip to Innisfail for a World Water Day presentation. Semester 2 Parent/Teacher Conferences were held from 3:30-8:00pm.
  • March 23 – Wear Your Favourite Team Jersey Day. Staff/Student Hockey Game was played at the Delburne Arena in the afternoon. This was an annual event that involved the whole school.
  • March 29 – monthly PAC meeting in the Learning Commons.

April 2017

  • Spell-a-thon Fundraiser was held in Elementary.
  • Grade 4-5’s started planning and building their mini golf course. Grade 6 started planning menus and building their Food Trucks. They will be selling food on June 1st at lunch.
  • April 2, 3 - High School students went on an overnight ski trip to Lake Louise and had a wonderful time!
  • Intramurals - 4 corner soccer.
  • April 3 - Grade 4-12 Chess Tournament began at lunch.
  • April 5 – Prairie Bus Lines held their School Bus Evacuation Practice.
  • April 6 – DCS Awards were held at 1:00pm sponsored by Delburne Massage and Wellness Clinic. Miss. Betts “Masters of the Arts” club started for Middle School Students at lunch.
  • April 10 – SUMO Intramurals for grades 9-12. Students wore large, padded SUMO costumes and wrestled! Grades 7-8 started building their soap boxes for the 3rd Annual Soap Box Derby on June 1st.
  • April 12 – Grades 9-12 went to Edmonton to see the play “Peter & the Starcatcher” at the Citadel Theatre.
  • April 14-23 – Spring break
  • April 25 – Rocks & Rings Program for K-8. Indoor curling in the Small Gym.
  • April 26 – Stanley Can Intramurals began at lunch. Students made up their own teams and played floor hockey. PAC Meeting at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons.

May 2017

  • May 2 - Drama Class held an Archie Improv Performance for Elementary classes to attend.
  • May 4 – DCS Awards where held at 9:00am in the Large Gym sponsored by Mervin & Roberta Peters.
  • May 5 – Grad 2017 Beef Supper/Silent Auction/Comedian Fundraiser. Great food, prizes and a lot of laughs!
  • May 6 – A group of enthusiastic grade 4 students attended the Young Writer’s Conference in Red Deer.
  • DCS held its first GSA Awareness Week!
  • May 8 – Grade 7 & 8’s attended a Science Workshop at RDC then went shopping for soap box supplies!
  • May 10 – Grades K-8 were involved in the Village Cleanup.
  • May 13 – PAC Hanging Plant & Planter Sale…fundraiser for our school.
  • May 15 – Intramurals began at lunch for grades 1-8.
  • May 17 – High School Track & Field meet in Red Deer.
  • May 18 – Playschool students visited our school. Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser for K-5 was held outside, raising $6004.00!
  • May 24 – High School Zones Track Meet, Elnora School grade 8 visit, Welcome to Kindergarten Night in the Learning Commons, to welcome the new students entering DCS in September. PAC Meeting at 6:30pm.
  • May 25 – RCMP guest speaker came to talk to grades 8-11 about Fentanyl, Elementary Talent Show, Elementary Talent Show in the afternoon.
  • May 26 – Grade 6 Food Truck field trip to Red Deer to observe/taste local food trucks for their school project, Grad 2017 Commencement Exercises.
  • May 31 – Farm Safety presentation for grades 1-5, Soap Box Derby Sponsor Night.

June 2017

  • Grade 5’s and the Drama students worked together building their puppet skills.
  • June 1 – Food truck Friday, Soap Box Derby in the afternoon.
  • June 3 – ASAA Provincial Track & Field meet in Edmonton…top 8 finish for Darby Duda!
  • June 5 – CENAA Track & Field Meet (grades 7-9), Red Deer. Students brought home the banner!
  • June 6 – Kindergarten Field Trip to Safety City, Red Deer.
  • June 7 – Second Annual Ghost Ryders Skate Park Competition - 31 athletes from 6 schools in 2 school divisions!
  • June 8 - DCS Awards where held in the Large Gym sponsored by Cumberland Community Club. Leadership Group hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch after the awards, to thank all of our wonderful volunteers at DCS. Grade 4/5 Confederation Mini Golf Course opened after school for the community to try
  • June 9 – Grade 1 Field Trip to the Calgary Zoo. Grade 4/5 Mini Golf Course opened again after school.
  • June 12 – Outdoor Ed went hiking up Coliseum Mountain.
  • June 14 – Grades 1-5 Field Day in the afternoon. PAC meeting at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons.
  • June 16 – Grade 3 Field Trip to Atlas Coal Mine.
  • June 19 – Grade 2 Field Trip to Sunnybrook Farm and Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Grade 11’s went hiking in Kananaskis Country.
  • June 20 – Kindergarten Field Trip to Discovery Wildlife Park, Innisfail. Parent Information meeting was held to discuss the next school year.
  • June 21 – Athletic Awards Ceremony was held in the morning, in the Large Gym. The Middle School Awards Ceremony was held at 6:30pm in the Small Gym.
  • June 26-28 – Grade 6’s annual camping trip to Camp Woods, Sylvan Lake.
  • June 27 – Diploma exams started for grade 12’s with a breakfast at 7:30pm. Grades 1-5 went swimming in Three Hills.
  • June 28 – Grade 4/5 Field Trip to Telus Spark, Calgary.
  • June 29 – Last day of school with an Elementary picnic before the students left!
